Under HB 1025, and Frankel’s Hate Crimes package, “misgendering” or simply not referring to someone how they wish, could be considered a hate crime. See examples below, showing how under other’s worldviews, speech can be seen as violence:
- Young woman cries over being misgendered, says it is the “worst pain I’ve ever felt…is an act of violence.”
- Cries over “deadname” being used.
- Crying over being misgendered all day, talks about how hard it is.
- Upset over coworker not using correct pronouns, shouldn’t have to explicitly tell everyone, people should just know.
- Upset people see her as a woman, even though she had top surgery.
- Disrespectful to not use right pronouns, “feels sh***y.”
- Teacher sad and almost in tears that there was only male and female listed on a survey for students.
- Man (with facial hair) loses it when a woman in his apartment confronts him for using the women’s restroom and especially because she calls him “he/him.” “Triggering and awful,” not safe.
- Teacher gets mad that the school won’t make a student use “they/them” pronouns for her.
- LGBTQ activist admits the goal is to ‘confuse straight people and instill chaos.’
- Pronouns aren’t a big deal, it’s about respect, if you make it a big deal, “you’re an idiot.”
- Female swimmers at University of Pennsylvania threatened by school officials for sharing concerns with Lia Thomas on women’s team.
- Vermont high school girls under “harassment investigation” for asking boy to leave locker room.
