Columbia, Pennsylvania — The Pennsylvania Human Relations—charged with enforcing Pennsylvania’s non-discrimination laws—entered a Final Order allowing Prudhomme’s Lost Cajun Kitchen to continue offering a discount on Sundays to persons who come with a current church bulletin. This order was received by attorneys for Prudhomme’s today. Intolerant of religion in society, the Freedom from Religion Foundation and one of its members brought a Complaint with Pennsylvania’s non-discrimination agency, claiming that the discount discriminated on the basis of religion.

“We should all keep in mind what discrimination is and why we passed laws like the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act,” said Randall Wenger of the Independence Law Center. “This law was designed to prohibit the mean-hearted refusal to serve someone at a lunch counter on account of their race or religion—not the kind-hearted desire to honor a public good like church attendance.” “Honoring an American tradition like church attendance should not be treated like bigotry.

The law was designed to serve society, not punish the best of our traditions,” added Chuck Proctor, also of the Independence Law Center. “It seems like in America, we should be free to do this sort of thing,” stated owner Sharon Prudhomme. “Had this case gone forward, it would have confused the language we use to talk about civil rights. If everything is as egregious as not serving an African American at a lunch counter, we lose the ability to understand and express what’s wrong and what’s not,” said Wenger.

We are glad to see that the agency tasked with enforcing non-discrimination laws has entered a final order allowing the church bulletin discount to continue,” said Proctor. “Religion should not be treated as poison—even if the Freedom from Religion Foundation in its constant attacks treats it that way.” “The American people are tired of having religion treated as something that needs to be hidden from public life or apologized for,” said Wenger.

Prudhomme’s attorneys received the final order from the PHRC today. Prudhomme’s Lost Cajun Kitchen will continue to offer its church bulletin discount to persons of all backgrounds.
