The Time to Act is Now!
Pennsylvania Family Council Calls for Passage of Critical Abortion Bills; Safety of Women and Children at Stake

For Immediate Release

September 26, 2011

(Harrisburg,PA)  – “The time to act is now – to end the special treatment and political protection forPennsylvania’s abortion clinics,” announced Michael Geer, president of the Pennsylvania Family Council.

“The time to act is now – to hold abortion centers to the same health and safety regulations as all other outpatient surgical centers.

“The time to act is now – to protect taxpayers from public funding of abortions through the back door of the new federal health care law.”

The Pennsylvania Family Council supports the pro-life House and Senate members who today stand committed to passing two key pieces of legislation:

1) Senate Bill 732 would further protect women and children by preventing future tragedies like Kermit Gosnell’s “house of horrors” inPhiladelphia; SB 732 (like HB 574) is common- sense legislation that would require the state’s abortion clinics to be regulated like every other ambulatory surgical facility.

2) Senate Bill 3 would protect taxpayers from backdoor funding of abortion through the federal health care law, and protect longstanding Pennsylvania policy. The federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act permits states to prohibit insurance providers in a state health exchange from covering elective abortions.

The Philadelphia Grand Jury report stated: “There is no justification for denying abortion patients the protections available to every other patient of an ambulatory surgical facility, and no reason to exempt abortion clinics from meeting those standards.”  We agree.

The Pennsylvania Family Council calls on the full House of Representatives and the Senate for swift passage of the bill, so it can go to Gov. Tom Corbett for his signature.  The tragedies occurred, the Grand Jury investigated, the hearings were held. Now is the time to get these meaningful laws on the books.
