In one of the most insensitive comments ever uttered by a Pennsylvania State legislator, Representative Wendy Ullman (D-Bucks) complained about a bill dealing with a healthcare facility’s handling of miscarried or aborted babies, calling it a fuss over what she called “a mess on a napkin.”
Ullman’s callous comments came during a House Health Committee meeting on House Bill 1890, which would require healthcare facilities to either bury or cremate unborn children who have died from an abortion or miscarriage. This bill is similar to one passed in the state of Indiana that was recently upheld as constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court.
“A miscarriage, no matter how early, does not result in a ‘mess on a napkin’ but the loss of a child,” commented Tom Shaheen, Vice President for Policy for Pennsylvania Family Institute. “Each human life deserves respect, even when lost at an early stage in development.”
Every Pennsylvanian should be appalled at such a heartless comment, which devalues life and ignores the pain experienced by so many women and families in Pennsylvania.
“The remains of human beings should be treated better than medical waste. Rep. Frank Ryan’s bill is a compassionate effort to help offer some closure to many mothers and families in Pennsylvania,” added Shaheen.
Pennsylvania Family Institute thanks lead sponsor Frank Ryan (R-Lebanon) and all of the 123 State Representatives who voted in favor of this legislation for final passage. The bill has now moved to the PA Senate for action.

Her comment was gross, disgusting, and disrespectful to the value of life and those the parents and family affected by a miscarriage or abortion. If these supposed caring democrats showed a fraction of concern to the life of the newborn or almost newborn as they do to gay and other issues, they would earn some of our respect and be seen as more human.
WOW…my miscarriage was NOT just a mess…it was a child that was not totally formed. I feel sorry for you Wendy Ullman that you obviously are so utterly naive, and so lost in your heart and life. This is such a disrespectful thing to say about life and to anyone who has had miscarriage. I will be praying that you find GOD in your heart and life; you need GOD in your life.
Representative Wendy Ullman (D-Bucks) – described herself well as a ‘mess on a napkin’.
Her political career needs to be discarded upon a garbage heap for the garbage that came out of her mouth.
Disgusting words coming from a human being! Disgusting!!!!! I needed to say it again. Sorry not sorry.
Thank you for publishing this. I will call her office and send a postcard of protest. 202-224-3121
Democrats have reached the lowest point on this earth ever. So glad I Walked aAway.
They do not have anything positive to offer the citizens of this great country. Yes, I SAID GREATEST COUNTRY ON EARTH. God Bless America God as we do embrace your blessings and this President. We do value your babies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Obviously she never had a miscarriage. My wife had 3 of them and each one was difficult. God have mercy on her .
