Planned Parenthood’s Attack Shows Why You Need to Know Where Governor Candidates Stand on Protecting Your Family

Planned Parenthood has released a statement attacking Gov. Corbett for being opposed to a proposed mandate that would force all public schools to teach their brand of so-called “comprehensive sex education.” They then go on to make dubious and self-serving claims about it.

Thankfully, Gov. Corbett understands what is at stake and sides with the majority of parents on this issue.

What Planned Parenthood is not telling us is what their brand of sex ed entails.

In a recent legislative session, the House Education Committee heard expert testimony on a bill – authored by Planned Parenthood – that would have mandated this type of explicit sex education for all 500 school districts in the Commonwealth and for students as early as middle school. The committee then wisely rejected it. Here’s some of what the committee discovered:

In a review of the most widely utilized “comprehensive” sex education programs, eight of the nine programs studied included sexually explicit material considered objectionable by a majority of parents polled.

In one Zogby poll, only eight percent supported “teaching teens how to use condoms when having sex and providing free contraceptives to teens is more important than teaching about abstinence; while 91 percent of parents agreed that “the best choice for sexual intercourse is to be linked to love, intimacy and commitment, qualities most likely to occur in a faithful marriage.”

The comprehensive programs reviewed actually encourage risky sexual behaviors. One leading program prompts teachers to: “State that there are other ways to be close to a person without having sexual intercourse. Ask youth to brainstorm ways to be close. The list may include…body massage, bathing together, masturbation, sensuous feeding, fantasizing, watching erotic movies, reading erotic books and magazines…”

This is the kind of sex education and approach to teen sexuality Planned Parenthood promotes, seeks to mandate, and then criticizes Gov. Corbett for opposing. Thankfully, they have not had their way in forcing this on Pennsylvania’s children, and we applaud Gov. Corbett for siding with parents and the well-being of children.

What parents prefer, in contrast, is authentic abstinence programs that help students understand that no birth control in the world can protect them from the emotional and physical consequences of early sexual activity.  Further, these programs clearly state accurate failure rates for birth control methods with the most current data and studies available.

It isn’t hard to imagine the real motivation for Planned Parenthood.  Programs like these act as lead generators for a business that rakes in at least a third of its clinic income from abortion.  “Comprehensive sex education” gets Planned Parenthood into schools, beginning relationships with young women that culminate in expensive abortion procedures.

The fact is Planned Parenthood owns 49 percent of the abortion clinics in the U.S. and perform almost one-third of all abortions in Pennsylvania. They know what studies have shown: Young women who begin having sex early are substantially more likely to have abortions.  “Comprehensive sex education” is just good business.

Planned Parenthood has been vastly out-of-touch with what Pennsylvania parents want for their children’s education. Rather than letting Planned Parenthood decide what’s right for every student in Pennsylvania, families and communities should be free to decide for themselves what sex education fits with their values.
