It’s hard to believe that in this economic climate, our governor and some of our legislative leaders are looking to expand gambling once again – as a way to balance our state budget.
Already, we know that gambling corrupts government. Our slot machine law and the embarrassing antics of the gaming control board demonstrate that.
We also know that legalized gambling doesn’t deliver on its promises. We have our ever-growing property tax bills to prove that.
But with the proposal to put video poker in virtually every neighborhood in the state, we’ll also have plenty of evidence of unemployed workers blowing their relief checks at the local tavern, seniors watching their social security payments go up in smoke, and grocery money from single moms lost in the most addictive form of gambling known. If these are the solutions our leaders are proposing, we need new leaders.
