Should government ‘get out of the marriage business’?

There is growing popularity for the idea of  “getting government out of the marriage business,” usually from those who want to re-define marriage to allow any two people (not just man and woman) to get married. Sometimes it’s people I know that would not endorse gay marriage, but make more of a libertarian, don’t-trust-government argument. Or the economics-minded who like to advocate privatization.

I think that idea is wrong on several fronts and here’s an excellent column by Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse that’s worth reading on it.
