Sponsorships and tickets are available for PA Family Institute’s 2018 Friends of the Family Banquet in Hershey on Saturday, October 20th. Join Pennsylvania Family Institute to hear from and honor two men who have become champions for religious freedom.

Jack Phillips, Masterpiece Cakeshop

Jack Phillips is a Colorado cake artist who politely declined to design a custom cake for a same-sex wedding. After a complaint was filed, the Colorado Civil Rights Commission ruled against him, ordering him to violate his faith or cease making wedding cakes altogether, which was 40 percent of his business. He was also being forced to go through re-education training. His case went all the way to the Supreme Court and on June 4, 2018, in a 7-2 landmark decision, the court reversed the state’s decision to punish Jack for acting consistently with his religious beliefs on marriage.

Now, unbelievably, the same Colorado Civil Rights Commission is coming after Jack Phillips again. They are prosecuting Jack after a customer filed a complaint for declining to bake a pink and blue cake celebrating a gender transition from male to female. It appears this same customer was targeting Jack by also requesting cakes celebrating Satan’s birthday, depicting drug use, and featuring Satanic symbols.  Jack serves all customers but cannot design custom cakes with messages that violate his convictions, no matter who is requesting the cake. Jack Phillips is now suing the state of Colorado for unjustly targeting him for his religious beliefs.

Coach Joe Kennedy

Coach Kennedy is high school football coach who would take a moment to pray after each game. His praying got him fired from coaching.

In 2015, the district suddenly ordered him to stop praying on the 50-yard-line after each game. Despite initially obeying the order, Kennedy believed it violated his freedoms of speech and religious and did it again, a decision that eventually cost him his job. His appeals in the courts have thus far been denied and he now seeks a hearing before the US Supreme Court in defense of his First Amendment rights.
