When you analyze the current state of Pennsylvania’s abortion industry there are several shocking details that are simply unacceptable and must be further exposed. The abortion industry in Pennsylvania is profiting from more abortions, failing state inspections, participating in inhumane experiments on aborted babies, all while attempting to force taxpayers to pay for abortions.

Unacceptable: Thousands More Abortions in Pennsylvania
Abortions have increased annually in Pennsylvania in recent years. The latest report from the Pennsylvania Department of Health identifies 32,123 abortions were performed in PA in 2020; up 7% since 2017. This amounts to 88 abortions every single day in PA. This recent increase represents over 2,000 more babies killed by abortion annually.
Over that same time span, Pennsylvania has seen a drop in babies being born. Since 2017, records show a drop in births by 3%, which represents over 3,000 fewer babies born annually. The number of babies born in Pennsylvania is declining at the same time the number of babies being aborted is increasing.
If this isn’t alarming enough, 2020 marked the first year more chemical abortions were performed in Pennsylvania than surgical abortions; now accounting for over half of all statewide abortions.
In recent years, the abortion industry has drastically expanded access to the abortion pill. Planned Parenthood began using telemedicine for “abortion by video” in 2020 and fully implemented this practice last year. This means Planned Parenthood is forgoing in-person consultations and ultrasounds to confirm the status of the pregnancy, which heightens the risks of complications, needs for surgery and leaving ectopic pregnancies unidentified. This increased risk would have been prevented had Gov. Tom Wolf not vetoed a bill in 2020 that would have banned the use of telemedicine for abortions.

Unacceptable: Majority of Abortion Facilities Failed Inspections
Over half of Pennsylvania’s abortion facilities failed a health inspection in 2021. Nine of the state’s 17 freestanding abortion facilities failed at least one inspection last year, including six of the 12 Planned Parenthood abortion mills in PA.
Infractions included performing emergency procedures that should be done in a hospital setting (Allentown Women’s Center put an 18-year-old’s life at risk), failure to offer informed consent, using expired anesthetic, and failure to keep exam rooms and equipment clean. Several abortion facilities failed consecutive inspections.
The list of abortion facilities that failed a health inspection in 2021 includes:
- Allegheny Reproductive Health Center
- Allentown Women’s Center
- Philadelphia Women’s Center
- Planned Parenthood Keystone – Allentown
- Planned Parenthood Keystone – Warminster
- Planned Parenthood Western PA
- Planned Parenthood Southeastern PA – Philadelphia (Comly Rd.)
- Planned Parenthood Southeastern PA – Philadelphia (Locust St.)
- Planned Parenthood Southeastern PA – West Chester
These locations are where the vast majority of abortions are performed in Pennsylvania. Each of these locations are also part of the lawsuit, Allegheny Reproductive v. Dept. of Human Services, demanding the state gives them taxpayer dollars to cover abortion services.
Horrific failure [Warning – Graphic written description*]: On March 19, 2021, an 18-year-old girl who was 17 weeks pregnant had a botched abortion at Allentown Women’s Center (AWC). She had been discharged but returned with extensive bleeding. Instead of calling an ambulance, AWC attempted another abortion procedure. When this failed and the young woman complained of “10 out of 10” pain and increased bleeding, AWC eventually called for emergency hospital services. While in the ambulance, she felt cold as the blood soaked through her clothes.
At the hospital, this 18-year-old girl had surgery to repair the botched abortion. She also received four units of blood along with four units of plasma. She was immediately sent to the ICU for monitoring.
It was determined that AWC failed to meet the surgical procedures criteria for ambulatory surgical facilities by performing a procedure that was an emergency or life threatening in nature, failed to enforce their policy for emergency transfers to an acute care hospital and failed to ensure medical records were sent with the patient upon transfer to an acute care hospital.
AWC staff that were responsible were “verbally educated and reprimanded” – no further description of what this reprimand included is found in the state department’s report. AWC shows no record of ever being fined or even temporarily shut down for any infraction. AWC performs over 2,000 abortions every year, hundred of which are at 15 weeks or later in pregnancy.
Allentown Women’s Center is part of the lawsuit now before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court demanding taxpayers pay for abortions.

Unacceptable: Experimenting on Babies from Elective Abortions

No school or university has generated more controversy surrounding the use of aborted babies from experiments than the University of Pittsburgh, where published research has included the scalps of aborted babies being grafted onto lab rats. Planned Parenthood has even admitted on a hidden camera that they provide Pitt with fetal tissue used for experiments.
Due to public outrage, this publicly-funded university recently hired a law firm to conduct an investigation of its practices. This independent review was performed in part by an alumnus of Pitt and the end result left so many important questions unanswered.

Unacceptable: Forcing Taxpayers to Pay for Abortions
It’s alarming that Pennsylvania’s abortion industry, which is failing so many health inspections, is suing the state in attempts to perform and profit from more abortions at the expense of taxpayers.
Every major abortion facility in PA, including Planned Parenthood, have brought a lawsuit against the state demanding taxpayers pay for all elective abortions. The case is now before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. Not only could the result of this lawsuit force taxpayers to fund elective abortions but it could also invent a right to abortion in the state constitution, putting every pro-life protection in jeopardy.
This is why we need our elected officials to pass the Life Amendment. Senate Bill 956, sponsored by Pennsylvania Senator Judy Ward, is a proposed constitutional amendment that would prevent courts from forcing taxpayers to pay for abortions and would protect our current pro-life protections by keeping abortion out of our state constitution.
