The Supreme Court takes on Religious Freedom in Case filed by Lancaster County business and its owners
(Harrisburg, PA) – The Hahn family, owners of Conestoga Wood Specialties, will have their case presented to the Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday morning March 25. For over a year, the Hahns have sought a religious exemption from the HHS mandate so that they will not be forced through their family-run business to provide drugs that can cause an abortion.

“Americans should be free to live out their faith in all areas of life – including the way they run their business,” says Randall Wenger, Chief Counsel of the Independence Law Center and a member of the legal team representing the Hahn family and Conestoga Wood Specialties.

The legal team includes Wenger, Charles W. Proctor, III and attorneys with the Alliance Defending Freedom.

“We’re hopeful that the Supreme Court will recognize that the Hahns’ religious liberties are at stake and that corporations themselves possess religious freedom,” said Proctor.

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania ruled against the Hahns in January 2013 and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit again ruled against the Hahns last July. Both times the court concluded that the Hahns’ religious liberty was not violated when they were forced, against their conscience, to use their corporation to provide abortion-causing drugs and that the corporation itself lacked religious freedoms. Now, the Hahn family and Conestoga – along with the Green family who own Hobby Lobby – bring their case to our highest court.
